Surrey Street image wins Croydon Guardian backed Heritage Festival competition.

A local amateur photographer has won the closely contested Croydon Heritage Festival photography competition sponsored by the Croydon Guardian.

The photography competition, entitled the Future of Past Places, was won by Steve Wallington, whose entry (pictured) depicting Surrey Street Market, gained the most public votes out of the ten images shortlisted.

As part of this year’s Croydon Heritage Festival run by The Whitgift Foundation, entrants were asked to locate areas depicted in five historic images of Croydon including North End, Katharine Street, Croydon Airport, Surrey Street and Wandle Park. They were then tasked with photographing these places and sending the results to us to be whittled down to a shortlist of ten which were then voted on by the public via Facebook, the Croydon Guardian’s website, and at the Croydon Heritage Exhibition in Fairfield Halls.

Steve’s photograph captures the vibrancy and richness of the atmosphere at Surrey Street Market in a similar manner to the original photograph.

Second place went to Jane Pittard. Jane’s entry depicts one of Croydon’s most historic buildings, the Pump House, just off Surrey Street.

As winner of the competition Steve wins a £150 Centrale gift card and also gets the opportunity to shadow a Croydon Guardian photographer for a day. Jane wins the prize for second place, a £100 Centrale gift card.
