The Whitgift Almshouses

Unique opportunity to live in 400 year Croydon landmark: Vacancies at the Whitgift Almshouses.

The Whitgift Foundation is delighted to announce that there are a couple of comfortable bed-sitting flats now available at the historic Whitgift Almshouses, located on the corner of North End and George Street, Croydon.

Home to 16 residents, the Whitgift Almshouses offers a warm, friendly and inclusive community for those over the age of 60 who wish to live independently but with a weekly programme of social activities and the benefit of 24 hour on call support.

Self-contained flats, each with a separate kitchen and bathroom, are clustered around a picturesque and peaceful quadrangle with residents having access to their own Chapel, Common Room and a fully equipped laundry.

Careline has been recently installed to provide residents with an emergency response 24 hours a day, seven days a week through their own personal ‘Rapid Response’ alarm.

Residents take pride in the fact that they live in a building steeped in history where the majority of its features remain as they were when founded by a former Archbishop of Canterbury, John Whitgift, in 1596 as The Hospital of the Holy Trinity.

The Whitgift Almshouses has specific criteria which prospective residents must meet in order to live there as set out by Archbishop Whitgift 420 years ago. Residents must be over the age of 60, of modest circumstances and subject to a financial assessment, a communicant member of the Church of England and presently live in the parishes of Croydon, Lambeth or the county of Kent.

A modest weekly maintenance charge would be payable to reside at the Whitgift Almshouses.

Owned and managed by The Whitgift Foundation, the Whitgift Almshouses is part of Whitgift Care looking after more than 100 older people.

Whitgift Care’s  two other care homes, Whitgift House and Wilhelmina House, offer a range of care services for different requirements including full nursing and residential care, respite and day care. Unlike the Almshouses, subject to medical assessments, entry to Whitgift and Wilhelmina House is open to all.
